What gets me out of layer at 5 a.m. on a Saturday ? Nothing that does n’t have to do with agriculture , horses or urban husbandry . So when I constitute out Will Allen , father of Growing Power and urban farmer extraordinaire , would be speaking on a Saturday morning at Idea Festival in Louisville , Ky. , I knew I ’d be there , bright and former .
Allen spoke to the crowd about Growing Power ’s oeuvre to educate urban farmer and develop hoi polloi around the public about sustainable agriculture and nutritious foods .
“ It ’s not a good nutrient crusade anymore . It ’s a revolution , ” he says . “ We all have a obligation to verify our neighbors , our friends and peculiarly our young 1 are eating nutritious food . ”

LM : What are some of the biggest challenges facing the great unwashed involved with urban husbandry ?

I think that is the key piece . Every community is different ; some communities are easier to engage than others .

And they say , “ Oh , we can turn food . ”

It ’s OK to take one vacant lot and put a demonstration there of what [ an urban farm ] can look like . Bring people there from share of the community , and show them that this is what you have done , and they can say , “ I want one of those on this vacant heap over here . ”
To me , that make sense . It also ply you with a place where you’re able to take political leader , funders and other people to get them on plug-in , because words are just flashy . you could say anything . The reason I show those image [ in the presentations ] is because that ’s the work we do ; it ’s concrete . People ca n’t deny it . …
I think that ’s really important — the engagement . If you ca n’t do that patch , you ca n’t move ahead . you’re able to spend all the money in the world . I ’ve seen projects where mass get $ 200,000 for a 100- by 100 - foot draw , but a twelvemonth later , it ’s all in locoweed . What does that imply ? You ’ve got to have passionate people ; you ’ve got to have more than one person . They can get along to Milwaukee for hands - on education from the ground up . That ’s how you get started . At those workshop , you encounter other people . Many clip , citizenry come to a shop and they run into citizenry in their own region who are doing similar work that they did n’t even know about . That ’s another way for them to get plight , because you need partnerships to do this work . You ca n’t do it in isolation . … This is communal stuff .
