I am joining in with Lucy atLooseandLeafyblog with a new tree this year;Aesculushippocastanum . I enjoyed pen about the Mulberry Tree last class and I learnt so much about the myths , folklore and historical and literary references to this tree .
This class I decided to take a tree in my own garden and as this is the oldest and the tall tree diagram in the garden , I resolve this would be the one . The Horse Chestnut tree is not a aboriginal and was n’t precede until the 17th century . It comes from the woods of the Balkans in Eastern Europe . Unfortunately , it does n’t have so much interesting folklore attached to it , as it is a proportional newcomer to this country . When it was first introduced , it grew on the estate of the rich and later in churchyards . Here it is , in my garden at the far end of the orchard .

Actually , I have two of these trees . I would love to know who set them and when . I would n’t have planted one of these heavyweight , never heed two . But there they are , and of course they will stay , as although they take up so much room , they are very majestic . finally , they grow so huge ; up to 36 metre , that they are undesirable for gardens really . There are horse chestnut tree Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree in the nearby God’s acre , so perhaps someone picked up the conkers and plant them . Or maybe fussy squirrel planted them , I find young trees coming up all over the garden . This is the other one which is about the same size . The leafage scars on the twig which are leave alone when the leaves descend off , appear just like horseshoes . Perhaps this is how the tree diagram get the name , ‘ Horse Chestnut ’ . Or perhaps the name came from the fact that they were thought to cure coughs in horses . I wonder if this melodic theme arose from the fact that the marks look like horse shoes . Our forefathers believe in theDoctrine of Signatures , which meant that they think that God had pass on his signature on plant , as a guide to which I would mend unlike complaint . I love the fat , glutinous bud in Winter . The grown reward of receive your own Horse Chestnut tree is being able to plunk the gummy bud and put them in a big vase . Then you may ascertain the leaf unfurling like fingerbreadth and the flush will open eventually too . Here are some I picked a week or two ago . If you would care to link in withLucy ’s Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree following meme the date to think of is the 7th of each calendar month . I am a little late , but the connection is loose until the 14th March . Do go and bring down and watch about the Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree that hoi polloi all over the world are following . peradventure you would like to link up in and follow a Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree , month by calendar month too .

How nice to read a tree diagram - following web log , or any web log , from you again . They always contain such interesting information . I have a lovesome place in my heart for horse chestnuts because there was a big one outside my room at Worchester College , Oxford , where I attended summer sessions . It was my protagonist , giant enveloping arms .
The Horse Chestnut is a super tree , but as you say , not for the medium garden . We get lots of seedling in our garden from the squirrels hiding the conkers . When we moved in 25 twelvemonth ago , we had 6 tree diagram , 2 have fall over since and now we have the moth whose caterpillar burrows between the two layer of the leaves.and makes the leaves look dreadful from July onwards , I hope your tree has n’t been move .
Oh I ’m proud of to meet your new tree Chloris . I ’ve been dithering over which tree to follow this year and was debating whether to go for the horse chestnut at the top of our lane but opted for another this dayspring 🙂 Our tree diagram is sadly diseased too so now looks its dear in spring when the candle are lit . I shall now be racking my mastermind for the rest of the day thinking of literary point of reference to chesnut trees .

I tip a wad about the mulberry tree , and wait forward to interesting titbit about the gymnastic horse chestnut tree ! Thank you Chloris ( the name Chloris always reminds me of Reynaldo Hahn ’s song “ À Chloris ” , do you know it ? ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hblAmLvg55 g ) .
A “ comparative starter ” from the seventeenth century – a reminder that the US in general and California in particular has a much briefer tape history . I enjoyed the Mulberry tree serial publication and look onward to this one .
I am looking forward to find out more about this Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree … .a most interesting tree .
