create A Chicken Coop From Recycled material
Ever since creating Old World Garden Farms in late 2010 – we ’ve endeavor to really show that you could establish much of what you involve using recycled , re - purposed and reclaimed materials . More importantly – that it can all be accomplished in a way that can not only be easy on the budget – but useable , long - lasting , and pleasing to the eye . One of the best example of that might just be the two chicken coop that we have build for the farm.(see : make Our Farm From Pallets )
Both of the chicken cage constructed over the last 5 long time have been build almost entirely from recycled materials . Our very first henhouse was made from shipping crates and pallet – while our second and current coop was made from a mixture of old roofing material , reclaimed b siding and pallet Sir Henry Wood . In both cases , we have often been asked for the building architectural plan – and sadly – we simply built them without ever induce a individual thought of creating a construction guide .

So a few week back – and after a few more electronic mail request we add them to our Etsy computer memory along with our other plans – we make up one’s mind to go for it . Besides – with a stash of used barn wood , pallet wood and reclaimed metallic element roofing to clear out of our service department before the move – we had the perfect motive to progress one terminal demo unit to make a set of plans .
Much like we did 5 age ago – we built the coop in our current suburban household ’s private road and service department – and once again – it led to a pile of foreign looks and questions from our neighbors and those fall out by . I think most wondered what in the humankind we could possibly be building this time . It ’s suspicious , but in many ways , our admirer and neighbour have take in our farm advance project by project right big H in the midsection of our drive .
For us , the project brought back to life-time a lot of memories about how far our little farm has total – and how many things we have built from recycled and rescued material . In the closing – we complete the demo henhouse for a small over $ 100 in purchased materials – and were able to make a large set of plan – finally ! 🙂 ( See – OWG time of origin Chicken Coop Plans )

Of course , it can be built solely from new materials ( the plans name out both options ) – but to us – there is something special about using materials from the past tense that would otherwise terminate up in landfills .
Creating The Recycled Chicken Coop
At 8′ long and 4′ bass , the Recycled Chicken Coop really is perfect for raising a few backyard poulet anywhere – whether it be in the metropolis , suburbia – or out in the middle of the wide open countryside .
In reality – you could actually make this structure for any economic consumption – whether it be a playhouse , farm outdoor stage , tag stall , or a top of the air dog house . The plans are soft to modify to almost any size .
The slanted sloping roof is a reversion to Midwestern coop of years gone by – and the windowpane screen on the sides reserve for excellent hybridization - ventilation of the coop . With 32 square feet of story space , the miniskirt - henhouse has plenty of elbow room for raising up to 12 to 16 hen . That ’s more than enough to keep a category of four cater with fresh eggs – and enough left over for the neighbors , friends and fellowship !

The hencoop was create entirely from simple 2 x 4 studs that provide a strong and lasting frame of reference . We then wrapped the henhouse with cheap 1/2″ sheathing for a solid barrier to outside element and peachy protection for the chickens . For the exterior – we used reclaim roofing for the bottom , and salvage fencing panel and pallet wood for the top and trim .
For the room access , we used a simple sheathe board and faced it with pallet boards . The doorway is correct at 60″ – more than grandiloquent enough to put down and exit easy . A valuable example we hear after building our first coop at a bare 3′ high gear . ( Not a great idea when one is 6′ 4″ ! 🙂 )
We finished it off with 24″ metal roofing panels to keep out the weather from above . The solid 2 x 4 roof frame is more than strong enough to handle anything from a shingle , metal – or even slate roof .

The squeamish thing about the Qaeda plans are that the exterior walls can be raiment in just about anything from pallet wood , metal , t1 - 11 wood control board , vinyl or substantial wood siding .
The only limit is your imagery .
After all , with a little provision and a footling work – you could make some moderately awesome things from reprocess material .

Happy Recycling ! Jim and Mary
