Favorites of the season
Barbara Cain has divvy up various prospect of her garden with us before . Some of her tropical favorites arehere , and her favorite plants for spicing up the wintertime in her sunroom arehere , but today she ’s sharing her preferred plants of saltation in her garden on the South Shore of Boston .
Barbara says that the shade area is the highlight of her garden , and it is gentle to see why ! From front to back : Hosta‘June ’ ( Zones 3–8),Pulmonaria(lungwort , Zones 4–9 ) , and fresh woodruff ( Galiumodoratum , Zones 5–8 ) .
A generous , lacy sweep ofAdiantumpedatum(maidenhair fern , Zones 3–8 ) , with the glistening leaves ofAsarumeuropaeum(European powdered ginger , Zones 4–7 ) in the foreground and the pink bloom ofDicentraspectabilis(bleeding tenderness , Zones 3–9 ) in the back .

More of the tincture garden , withHosta‘June’,Pulmanaria , variegate Solomon ’s stamp ( Polygonatumodoratum‘Variegatum ’ zone 3–8 ) , andDicentraspectabilis .
Juniperusvirginiana(Eastern red cedar , Zones 2–9 ) is a native Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree over a wide swath of North America . The evergreen foliage is a nice emphasis in any garden , but what is really magical is what happens when this species gets old and the automobile trunk begins to morph into a murmur , twisted specimen like this , which look like something out of a fairy narration . Under it are growing ligularia ( Ligularia dentataZones 4–8),Rhododendron‘Scintillation ’ ( zone 5–8),Hosta‘Great arithmetic mean ’ ( Zones 3–8 ) , andGaliumoderatum(sweet woodruff ) .
Another eyeshot of that gorgeous Eastern red cedar , flanked byRhododendron‘Scintillation ’ with Japanese painted fern ( Athyriumniponicumvar.pictum , Zones 3–8 ) and sweet waldmeister beneath .

Spring bloom from two trees . To the leftfield is a weeping unfolding cherry ( Prunus‘Snow Fountains ’ , zone 5–8 ) ; to the right is a deciduous magnolia ( Magnolia‘Dr . Merrill ’ , Zones 5–9 ) .
Nipponese burnet ( Sanguisorbaobtusa , Zones 4–9 ) will have spikes of blurry pink peak later in the year , but right now it is a mound of lush leaf next to a cloud of forget - me - nots ( Myosotissylvatica , Zones 3–8 ) , with the dark-skinned foliage of American hellebore ( Actaeasimplex‘Hillside Black Beauty ’ , Zones 4–8 ) behind .
