Fleeting spring flowers in a lesser-seen section of a well-known garden
It ’s always a goody when award - winning landscape painting designerJay Siffordsends in photos of his mythologic home garden in the mountains of North Carolina . Today we have an extra - particular dainty :
Many are familiar with myseptic drain subject field turned stylized meadowin the front cubic yard of my house called Rhodwood , which is locate in the western North Carolina mountains at 3300 feet . We were Zone 6b ; now we ’re 7a . Fewer have seen the back garden , access by a serial of switchback steps . This orbit is comprised of a largerhododendronmaximum timberland with a hightree canopy , consummate with two rude bogs and a stream with rapids .
The natural plant palette contains mostly spring ephemeral that are go by the end of June , just about the time the front garden prime . hundred of aboriginal skunk cabbage(Symplocarpus foetidus , geographical zone 4–7),Trilliumsulcatum ( southerly scarlet trillium , Zones 4–7),Veratrum , and marsh marigolds(Caltha palustris , zona 3–7 ) form the framework . My goal was to deck this natural wonderland with native and nonnative industrial plant that wait at home in the distance .

Ostrichfern(Matteuccia struthiopteris , Zones3–7 ) , woodlandphlox(Phlox divaricata , Zones3–8 ) , andVeratrumsay spring more than any other plant combination in the garden .

I have a twelve or soJapanese maplesin this lower garden , varieties that likepartial refinement . This one isAcerpalmatum‘Ghost Dancer ’ ( Zones 5–9 ) .
Emerging maidenhair ferns(Adiantumraddianum , Zones3–8 ) glisten in the afternoon light . I enjoy ferns !
Trollius chinensis(globeflower , Zones 3–7 ) is new to me . I ’m going to love it !

Naturally occuringIris cristata(crested iris , Zones4–10)lives at the top of the switchback steps .
I ’ve planted hundredsofTiarellacordifolia(heartleaf foamflower , Zones4–9 ) .
Arisaemaringens(Japanese cobra lily , Zones 5–9)blooms by the whole tone .

Jay sent a true hoarded wealth treasure trove of spring plant photos , so we ’ll be back in his garden tomorrow to see more of what he ’s growing .
