Propagation

I latterly decanted some softwood cuttings that bet like they had root judging solely by some nice new top growth . In doing so I broke my newly evolve gilded rule , namelydon’t do thisuntil tons of roots are seeming at the bottom of the pot .   I convinced myself that new top ontogeny must mean new root . With hardwood cuttings , I have acquire to my monetary value that this is often not the lawsuit , but I figured that   a deal stem does n’t have any modesty in it , so the flora must be buzz off its vigour from somewhere .

In forgetful , I fuck off aside with it . While there was the odd stem with no roots , most had a good stage set , surely enough to pot on .

For a smallish set of roots , my usual approach is to loosely over - fill a 7 cm square pot with compost , so that it is well mound .   I make a large hole with a finger , waggled about till there ’s batch of room .   I place the press clipping in the golf hole , remove care not to damage the roots on the way , then use the supernumerary compost to gently tauten it in .

Here are the happy cuttings .

Gaura ‘ Passionate Pink ’ . With a minute of zooming you may clearly see the newfangled top growth .   Roots - a - plenty here .

Euphorbia , twitch from my female parent ’s garden , not certain what the multifariousness is .   Again , the new growth is obvious and all had a unspoilt set of roots .

Lobelia species ‘ Fan Bourgogne ’ . mess of newfangled top growth , and lots of radical to go with . Joy .

Carnations .   I took these a couple of months ago . A few stem had rotted off , but most are OK , although the root are far from telling .

Abelia .   This is actually the last of my hardwood cuttings taken last December .   I attempted to pot this on a couple of monthsago , but found it did not actually have any origin despite some nice green fresh growth up top .   I in haste repotted it and popped it in the heated bench for a little R&R.   A duo of month later on it has a goodly stage set of base and looks very happy pot up in fresh compost .

I had some salvia ‘ grim marvel ’ cutting that I did not photograph this metre that were also rooted , punctually pot up .   I also have a confession to make .   Some month ago on a sojourn to Greenwich Park I vandalise a courteous look peonie – I nabbed a few base tips for cut .   disgraceful behaviour .   I later take that peonies do n’t react well to cuttings , but one of them has survived long enough to put on roots , so we shall see , I ’ve potted that up too .

Here they all are , pot up and waiting for a feed and water supply .   I put them back in the het bench to uprise on for a while , then I ’ll start to harden them off , with the aim of overwintering them alfresco , perhaps in the cold-blooded - soma .

I was so proud of with these results that I ’ve taken some more cuttings of penstemon , gaura and salvia .   No such matter as too many plants !

I ’ll be back shortly with more generation palaver .
