Nature manages to see way for plants to propagate themselves by seed without any fancy equipment . Plants have evolved to reproduce in melody with , or in cattiness of , circumstance rife in their   original habitat . These conditions might include extremes of temperature , moisture tier , competition from more vigorous plants , seasonal variant , rake patterns , all sorts . This has resulted in many dissimilar mechanism for reproduction by cum ; variation in seed var. , statistical distribution strategy and delaying tactics which set hire to maximize the chances of pass its genes on to the next genesis .

I should not have been surprised then , to find that treating all ejaculate the same way results in patchy germination . Last year this is precisely what I did . I sowed everything the same way , putting all the potentiometer in the heated bench at 20 ° c . This worked well for about two third of the seed change   I sowed . Those germinated away , some quickly , some tardily , but all perfectly satisfactory . But about a third of the varieties mulishly refused to germinate . Rookie error . I do not mean to reprise that misapprehension this year so I ’ve done a minuscule enquiry . The game is to win over the seeds that their evolved germination condition have been assemble . I have attempted to apportion each seed variety I have to one of just a few categories of treatment :

To bestow to the playfulness , some   seeds have a hard covering that needs breaking down to let out the innards to moisture , trigger the sprouting process . In the wild this magic trick would be employed to retard sprouting , either until a more suitable time of twelvemonth , or to take into account for Department of Transportation . Canna is a good example , some of which I sowed the other day . I sanded the seeds   down till the proscribed layer wore away .   This is wily than it sound – a small , legato ,   spherical   object is quite hard to grip and lend oneself to gumption paper without sandpaper fingers , and/or lose the seed . After doing precisely that and , I ’m afraid to say , effing and jeffing a few time , I ended up gripping the seed in some wire - pinnace and rubbing on the emery paper . Worked a kickshaw . Some say they should also be soaked in water for 24 hours or more . I just sowed mine , trust that the normal watering process is enough .

Anyhow , back to the majority . At least for the seeds I have , most of the funny stage business with semen treatments is with the perennials . For the most part the annuals are happy enough in the heated up bench for an former sowing , or even unmediated where they are to grow .   Here is how they part down ( click to zoom in & read ) .

That is the origin of a sowing plan for my flower seeds this year . Next step is to put some timings on this lot . Addled plantaholic though I am , even I can see that this might be too many mixture to manage , especially as there is another batch of 20 packets of perennial seeds to derive as a favourable - fall from the Hardy Plant Society seed scheme . I may have to ( boo hoo ) limit myself to a sub - set . As any of my teenagers might say , what - EVER !
