Next twelvemonth , I ’d like to make more of my addictive free fall , in which I fill in roasted zucchini for eggplant .

This calendar month , my gardening cage ’s period of assessment and bill for next year coincide with Rosh Hashana , the Jewish New Year , so it ’s a perfect time to make resolutions to do things considerably and differently next year . We learned so much from this first experiment that we want to benefit from it again next summertime .

Many of our garden failures were beyond our control and the result of weather , like the melon vine that never ripened , which I write abouthere . We decide to foregomelonsaltogether in the time to come and grow morewinter squash .

This year , the rain was very severe on our tomatoes ; we ’re going to move them and re - trench with sturdy variety . While ourbroccoliwas potent , the worm were , too , and we hardly saw acauliflower . We never saw our soybean plant , and our Brussels sprout got lost , as well .

We had just manage to make unnecessary our eggplant from the weeds , but we could n’t keep up with the amount of lettuce we had planted . The novelty Mexican gherkin that uprise like gangbusters were apprize by only one member , and not enough of us loved the durable and multi - dark Beta vulgaris cicla we grew , either . I ’d care to see us endeavor to produce kohlrabi and more common fennel . We love the peas and green dome , of which we all want to grow more , and we adored the beet .

In addition to the group ’s resolutions , I have my own list of vegetables that I desire to cook and eat more of . Next year , I ’m going to push my own pickle gasbag further , beyond the melon vine rind , pea plant pods and Raphanus sativus I tried this year . I ’m also determined to harvest our prolific gumbo pocket-size so I can learn to apprize it . Lastly , I want to try on cook wintertime squeeze and roasted onions puréed into a spread .

As for the vegetables I ’d care to eat more of ? I think I ’ll never get enough of my in the altogether borecole salad with Parmesan , save lemon dressing , lily-livered raisins and helianthus germ , as well as my addictive dip that ’s somewhere between hoummos and baba ghanoush . To make the dip , I substituted roastedzucchinifor eggplant .

High - heat roasting is a terrific and simple cooking method for most vegetable , but the silky leeks that I slow - braised intrigued me to explore that method acting further . I love celery source in Graeco-Roman remoulade salad , and I intend to try it in a creamy gratin , as I have with other root vegetables . More coleslaws , more greens .

I ’d get it on to hear your hindsight assessments and New Year ’s resolve , beloved reader . Was there a new recipe you bring out that you ca n’t await until next time of year to make more of ? Was there a crop you missed out on that you ’re determined to make use of in the next go - round ? Did you originate a new enthusiasm at the Fannie Farmer market place , a new method for your deck garden or a new tasting in your kitchen ?

Slice an Malus pumila , dip it in local love , and while you munch on that Rosh Hashana dainty that symbolizes the fragrancy of novel beginnings , reflect a little and beam me a line .
