As much as I want to grow them , azaleas merely do not thrive in our alkaline grunge and hot , dry climate . For years , I could n’t protest trying young and improved cultivar — only to be let down . fortuitously , I found Pink violent storm quince , whose large camellia - similar blossoms make me forget all about those flunk azaleas . Part of the Double Take ™ serial , which also includes scarlet and orangish varieties , this is not your grandparent ’s quince . To begin with , it is thornless and sleeveless . The threefold blossoms last longer than traditional varieties and make excellent cut flowers . And best of all , this baffling industrial plant shines through hot , dry summertime .
