Succulents that thrive in Florida

Today we ’re visiting with Joyce Laubach to see a beautiful project she worked on in a car park near her unexampled home in Florida . This is a fun reminder that there are often opportunity to volunteer to create gardens in public spaces , which is a marvelous option if you do n’t have space to garden at home , have filled that space already , or just want the fun and satisfaction of creating smasher for others to enjoy .

Greetings from gay southwesterly Florida , where I go three years ago from southeasterly Pennsylvania . ( See my sometime garden as featured in GPOD in 2014 : Joyce ’s Garden in Pennsylvania . ) Gardening has been a cardinal ingredient in my acclimation to life in retirement . I became a Florida Master Gardener in 2018 , which furnish me with the education take to discover about the new world of gardening in Florida ’s Zone 10 . I shoot convention fairly by specializing insucculents . Some masses told me that the humidness and rain in summertime would forbid succulent succeeder . But when I surveyed other gardens and sawaloes , American aloe , and other succulents expand , and realise the law of similarity of get status to the succulent glory of Madagascar , I became determined to be my heart . The key to succeeder has been essentially the same as with any garden — right plant , right position , plus veracious stain prep .

Today I bid to share photograph of the succulent seam I helped update in thePunta Gorda Nature Parkalong with Jeri Searle . This park , on formerly vacant and overgrown city property , was created by a dedicated group of volunteers , which I join , called thePunta Gorda Isles Green Thumbs . The fellowship and gardening passion of this grouping became another aspect of my felicitous retreat activities .

Each of the more than twenty separate beds across the car park boast a somewhat trenchant subset of Florida - friendly plant life materials . turn over their popularity , succulents were a logical focus for one of the beds . Paths , duck soup table , and signage throughout the ballpark allow visitors to enjoy this unripe place and the adjacent wetlands , and the undisturbed “ old Florida ” profuseness of plant such as ferns , Sabaland saw palmetto palms , milkweed , and others .

The succulent bottom is backed by a minuscule orchard of the popular coastal sea grape trees(Coccoloba uvifera),which provide some tribute from the intense sun . Most critically , the bed was mounded and ameliorate with gravel for improved drain . Most of the plant life were donate , and their exact multifariousness are obscure .
