Back at the get-go of 2014 I postedmy survival plant profile on pears , underwrite pear diverseness for the south , and specifically North Florida .

Erik writes:

“ purportedly the “ Chinese white-hot Pyrus communis ” ( Bai li ) cultivars Tsu Li ( which is really ancient and purportedly just but quite dull to gestate ) and Ya Li ( which need to be planted together , as they bloom originally than even the pyrifolia Asians [ “ Malus pumila pears ” ] ) will both fruit with only 450 chill hr and are fireblight resistant .

I have had grocery Ya Li and am not impressed – nipping , weak , no flavor ( that is also my notion of most of the declamatory , pyrifolia types which someone must like because they are more expensive than redolent , buttery European pears that taste like pears ) .

However I found a delicious manner to treat truehearted Boscs that also works with humiliated flavor Baroness Dudevant / oriental pears and Ya Li is to poach them in flavour sirup . The smooth ones in reality keep their shape well than proficient European types ( turn a Seckel oversupply into pear tree butter instead ) . The tang comes from the sirup rather than the pear tree , but hey , it works . ( The French mostly use sweetened wine-colored , but even dusty coffee . In [ Polish ] Chicago , I can get blackcurrant juice or syrup and mostly utilise that . Vanilla and gingerroot blend in nicely with most pears , even the aromatic ace that are mostly high shivering and killed by fireblight . ) .

“ Warren ” is often recommended as a passably low quiver ( NW FL and north ) , fireblight resistant European sort similar to Bartlett , but I do n’t have personal experience with it . poach pears with vanilla ice cream may not be an option if the something hits the devotee , but is dainty in nicer times . ”

And Carl responds:

“ I have a lot of pear tree tree in Northwest Florida that are mostly transplant over pears I buy in box store or in flea markets . I nibble mixed bag that were either developed in the deep southward by normal people or were found after many years did quite well .

well clean eating pears and ardor blight resistant so far for me are : southern bartlett ( From abbreville , la ) gilded boy fromJust Fruits and Exotics , and the Asian pear Olton Broussard from an sometime shipment to a nursery tag oriental pear . Kieffers and Orient pears for cookery / salads and for pollinating the olton broussards .

There are many new pears that I am trying out at the mo that are say to be very good . But the three I mention are about as sure of matter as there can be in the southward . The olton broussard may not fruit in zone 9 or during extremely quick winters in zone 8b .

Pear Varieties for the south

The hoodlum is another good but early pear that is disease resistive and very low shudder . It was university developed unlike the other feeding pear tree that I mention seehttp://tandeecal.com/page10.htmsouthern pear interest radical . ”

Pear Varieties for the South

The orbit of those pears probably goes a good bit far north . For south of Gainesville , the only three pears recommended are :

Le Conte grow in North Florida and is apparently an first-class pear ; however , it ’s not as disease repellent as some varieties .

When I natter the Orange County extension office in Orlando to take my telecasting on fruit trees for Florida , I noticed that the Pineapple pear was the only Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree that was expand . However , the tree were planted in a hot field .

I believe they would have done much good in a mulch - deep surround with a salmagundi of other mintage , food - woodland style .

Here ’s that video :

Inmy North Florida nutrient forestI grew Florda Home , Pineapple , Hood , Kieffer , Baldwin and other recommended pear varieties for the Dixie , plus graft branch onto some of them from an old rich pear tree rise in Gainesville of unsung variety . ( you could memorise basic grafting – it ’s easy ! – withmy filmGet Grafting ! , usable for a donation of any amount here . )

hoi polloi often do n’t earn how far south you’re able to grow pears .

It is good to see people have success . Do n’t neglect pear tree – try some on your homestead !

Imagine homemade pear pie , pear sauce , displace pears , pear salsa … eating them smart and sun - warmed from the tree . I never knew how good pears really were until I uprise my own tree . memory - bought pear are a pallid impersonation of ripe fruit from the tree .
