As the first frost landed on my gondola window , I get laid I would before long be called into action . Even though the ground temperature kept the frost from the garden , the need to put the garden to bed for the wintertime was on my dog . I went about my wintertime preparations gayly , in anticipation of what I trust would add up . I was quick . Without this first rime , we ca n’t formally observe the 5th season – an Indian Summer .
As I walked into the back garden , I screw powerful away : Today we will have an Indian Summer . It may only last a day , maybe two . It may add up again next hebdomad , or not . Indian Summers are unpredictable . Perhaps that is why it is so important to keep the time of year when it occurs : Tomorrow may be too tardy .
There is no an official checklist to aver an Indian Summer , beyond an unseasonably strong day succeed a frost . But a near look will reveal many indicators . The sky is the first indicator of an Indian Summer . The coloring is dreary , but not just any blue air . Perhaps you would draw it as cerulean bluing , or corn flower blue devil , or peradventure even Pantone Blue 292 . I know it simply as Carolina blueness .

The temperature is on the rise and predicted to hit 77 degrees .
As I journeyed down the garden path , I could tell birds were were up to something . Their chatter sounded as if they were sharing some late excitation . look high-pitched in the Carolina blue sky , I could see even more birds . Some were travel north , others in the south . They traveled alone , in pair , and in groups of three or more . There did n’t seem to be a traffic pattern .
Were they traveling somewhere or just flying because they can , I wondered ? Did they feel the same inflammation that this Indian Summer brought me ? Were they act ? I was . If I had the power to flee just once , it would be today .

More Monarchs were visiting , stopping for a sip before their farseeing journey South . Fortunate for me , our first frost was n’t a hard one . There were still plenty of ambrosia - rich perennials to feed the wildlife .
The air was dry , resulting in intense color . Marxist were violent , yellow yellower , greens greener . TheAmsonia hubrechtiibegan to cloak its late yellow gloaming color . The Oakleaf hydrangeas were turn a fantastic red ink before losing their leaves . Our loblolly pines eminent in sky looked their best now – or they did to this gardener . Their direct contrast against the Carolina risque sky was arresting .
I do n’t remember noticing thePinus strobus‘Hillside Winter Gold ’ beginning to turn its wintertime yellow colour , nor do I remember the ramification of the red bow dogwood tree . I definitely do n’t remember a jot of color change on the Coral barque Japanese maple . Was it that agency yesterday , or did the colors perhaps add up out today to wager in the Indian Summer ?

It did n’t count that I forgot to check the weather last night to cognise what the day would play . All the good , actually . An Indian Summer is not a planned event . It is a mo ; a rare day to observe nature , the fall , the futurity . An Indian Summer is one of those moments gardeners comprehend . Now , if only I could fly …
