What do you get when you cross a tomato with a potato plant? If you answered the new Ketchup ‘n’ Fries plant from Territorial Seed Company, you’re right.
When I go out the new Ketchup ‘ n ’ Fries plant in this season ’s Territorial Seed Company catalog , I have it off I had to found one . I ordered one of these tomato - potato flora to try in my container garden this year . The Lycopersicum esculentum + Solanum tuberosum plant is an interesting double crop , producing red cherry tomatoes on top of the plant and white white potato maturate underground .
Ketchup ‘ n ’ Fries ( by TomTato ) is ahand - engraft plant . It has a love apple scion graft onto a potato rootstalk . The answer is a plant with two all - natural crops .
This offer is raw to American gardeners this year , but gardeners in the United Kingdom had the fortune to grow them last class .

But what sounds like a unique horticultural innovation today is in reality over a century old . In the nineties , British gardener had already been involved in experiments that grafted Solanum tuberosum with other Solanum metal money , such as tomatoes and aubergine .
Gardeners in those days could take about these experimentation in the top gardening publications of the times . The February 4 , 1899 , edition of the Gardeners ’ Chronicle and New Horticulturist gave a thorough report of the Royal Horticultural Society ’s January meeting , that include experiments conducted by an enterprising nurseryman named A. W. Sutton .
The Scientific Committee ’s report included exhibits of the results of several potato , tomato , and eggplant experiments . “ The merging of the Scientific Committee at 4 p.m. was of more than common stake , ” the write up stated . “ Mr. A.W. Sutton give some interesting data regarding a series of experiments that Messrs. Sutton & Sons have lately made in deference to the Solanum tuberosum … ”

The Suttons showed off the potatoes that resulted from their grafting experiment . “ In 1895 , a typical sample of Potato Supreme was ingraft with a scion from the Egg - Plant . In this showcase the case of the white potato has been insensible by the graft , ” according to the report .
His experimentation also let in grafting the scion of a Lycopersicon esculentum onto a potato , grafting the scion of a potato onto a tomato , and growing out the potatoes of a “ distinct variety show of Potato from Africa ” ship to him by a Quaker .
Territorial Seed Company is offering a love apple - potato active twosome exclusively by mail Holy Order through itswebsiteor by phone .
