Making a garden in the woods

Hi , I ’m Kristi and I dwell in Raleigh , North Carolina . When we moved into our theatre 10 years ago , the backyard was heavy wooded . We loved it at first , but over clock time we realized that wooded does not of necessity meanlow - maintenance . Eventually , we want some sunlight and to be able to go outside without the solid ground being muddy . We also had a pack of cards that was starting to rot and a roof with moss and algae grow on it . So over the year we had several large Tree bump off that were close to the house and had a screened - in porch establish . That ’s when I caught the horticulture hemipterous insect . A lot of hoi polloi want their decks andpatiosto feel like an lengthiness of their home , but I want ours to sense like it was plopped down in the middle of acottage garden . So I got to work . I bug out with creating thepathwayand over the last three age have see a affair or two about the importance of industrial plant emplacement and choosing the right plant for the space . I rely mostly on perennials for this partial - spectre garden ( multiplephloxvarieties , coreopsis , foxgloves , coneflower , stalwart geranium , andhydrangeas , to name a few ) , but I also pop in differentannualseach year . Over the past two long time I ’ve been working on twowoodland gardenareas . Both are pretty heavily shaded , so I expend Lot ofhostas , ferns , oakleaf hydrangea , and understory trees such asdogwoods , red Japanese maples , andredbuds . Although they are n’t needs the “ stars ” of the gardens , I ’ve also made a point to add in lots ofnativetrees , bush , and perennial . Every year I make new ( and onetime ) mistakes , but it ’s been fun larn as I go . I ’ve also enjoyed connect with other gardeners online through Instagram ( @thescreenporch.garden ) .

Both these plants — a bluePhloxdivaricata(Zones 3–8 ) and a yellow coreopsis ( tickweed auriculata , Zones 4–9)—are North American natives that convey a stack of color to the garden .

The xanthous coreopsis blooms are a repeated composition in the garden .

As the garden moves into more shade , the flowers are supersede by the leaf ofhostas(Hostahybrids , Zones 4–9 ) , heuchera ( Heucherahybrids , Zones 4–9 ) , and pulmonaria ( Pulmonariahybrids , Zones 3–9 ) .

Impatiens ( Impatienswalleriana , Zones 10–11 or as yearbook ) institute pops of color into the nicety .

Justfoliagealone can make for a wonderful planting , with a wide range of colors andtextures .
