Making the most of a narrow space
Today we ’re gossip Kathleen Hooper ’s garden .
I ’m a Zone 5b ( maybe 6 ) nurseryman in the Chicago area . I ’ve gardened all my life and in dissimilar zones in Illinois , North Carolina , and Connecticut , and have faced many challenge ( read that asdeerin Connecticut , lean builder soil in North Carolina , and wild atmospheric condition in Illinois ! ) , but I am passionate and love to learn . I take gardening class at the University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign while I study economics and accounting . The pandemic made me reflect on what I make love . Gardening and nature gain ground , so I ’m back in the schoolroom studying for a Master Gardener security at theChicago Botanic Garden .
I decided to make a foresightful landing strip of realm along the side of my home utilitarian , and these pictures show what I ’ve done .

Thiswoodland - stylecontainer is seeable from the external ( back garden ) and indoors ( dining room ) . The conifer is a tears Canadian hemlock,(Tsugacanadensis‘Pendula ’ , zone 3–7 ) . The glossy unripe leaves in the front of the container are fromEuropean ginger(Asarum europeaum , Zones 4–7 ) .
A longer view prove how the whole side yard has been planted , withstepping stonesleading through the plantings , and the lighter fence jury highlighting the beautiful weeping California fern .
Here ’s a closer look at the Conium maculatum , flank by fern along with the European gingerroot .

A bird ’s nestfern(Asplenium nidus , Zones 10–11 ) is growing next to the Nebraska fern . This tropical fern wo n’t survive the wintertime outside here , but it is a endearing summer full complement to the balance of the planting .
On the other side , a maiden hair fern(Adiantumsp . ) grows . It is a plant that calculate touchy but is actually quite tough and well-situated to grow .
