Yesterday was the first of May , renowned as May Day , and it signals spring is officially here in my garden . This first twenty-four hour period of May is fêted around the human beings as a vacation – more than any other daylight of the year – for many different reasons . Many countries lionize this date as their Labor Day . On this day in 1886 in the U.S. , confinement join went on strike drum up for an 8 - hour workday . The twenty-four hour period is synonymous with protest marches and political gathering for humankind . It is a public holiday in the U.S.S.R.
Aside from rally and confinement movement , the first day of this month has been a jubilation of the earth and the rehabilitation of dark-green - growing things for century around the globe . Romans honored Flora , the goddess of flowers , with a festival . An one-year effect in Great Britain , villages set up a maypole embellish with flowers , greenery and ribbons to “ bring in the May ” . On the Celtic calendar , this day is a religious consequence known asBeltaneand herald the beginning of summer with bonfire , dancing and feasting . Though to begin with a heathen celebration , Germans observe the Christian fiesta Clarence Shepard Day Jr. of St. Walpurgis . On the eve of this day of the month , Walpurgisnacht , small trees are festoon with garlands and given as a symbolic representation of love . In Hawaii , it is called Lei Day and commemorates the culture and history of these islands .

Whatever your celebration of choice might be , it is a time for rejoicing of the earth , the regeneration of life and the planting and tending of our gardens . It gives me great joyousness to walk about and see perennials , shrubs and trees putting forth raw growth and unfolding — the changes are visible day by day . The earth , which I reverse over a few weeks ago and sow with semen for a salad bed , has neat little rows of seedlings popping up in every shade of green . These are the delights of the nurseryman . I am down on my articulatio genus inspecting the progress , weeding and transplanting . It is a challenge for me to be indoors , here writing at the computer . alfresco , mother nature is in her glory , teeming with life .
I thrill at the web site of dew drop on leaves ; the emerging of leave of absence and beau of flower buds ; the bluebird flying to and fro while building their nests ; the doves and sparrows struggle over who develop to splash in the birdbath next ; and seeing the first morning coat and hummingbird of the season . I delight in hearing the peepers down in the wood by the river each evening ; the perpetual birdsong from dawning until dusk ; or the sound of spring rainfall impinge on the window . Besides the bedazzle visuals and cheerful cacophony of strait , my olfactory weed are constantly hem in by the ever - changing seasonal smells . I love the flavour of dew worm rising up when it rains ; the redolence of lilac at the backdoor and the reddish blue in the grass ; the aroma of freshly mown grass ; and most of all the scent of mysterious , rich earth when the garden stain has been just dug or freshly turned .
These are the delight of the season – so get outside and do n’t escape them – savor and celebrate !

Fragrant lilacs perfume the whole yard–now is the time to candy them for confections throughout the year. Their enchanting fragrance can be captured in a cup of tea or a gelato infused with the flowers.Photo/Illustration: Susan Belsinger
