It ’s been a long year since we began this kitchen remodel , now that the project is at long last we can move onto other projects ( like write my book , and for this web log which I have been ignore – not to mention strain to reorganize myself after being position off last March . Our great reversal has been the tragic loss of Curtis last January – when we just did nt feel like doing anything more with the kitchen , until this October when we decided to just move ahead and finish up it the best that we could .
I ’m sharing this undertaking here because I know many of you have been ask about the kitchen , or you ’ve been here while we had been under construction . Now that it is staring , the skillful matter is that we finally have a dandy new kitchen and dining area , the uncollectible thing is that we can no longer use the self-justification that the house is a fix because of the twist !
This stake is farseeing , but it shows before , during and after images of how we mix two big room in an one-time house which was my parents , and my grandparent . I had to get the best some emotional attachment with murals that my dad painted in the 1940 ’s and 1950 ’s , as well as cabinetry that he also custom painted back then .

We also were working with a limited budget , one that we likely go over now that we were not getting labor from Curtis for spare , but without adding it all up , I retrieve that all of this was complete for less that 20k , which whh broke into smaller installments , 3k here , 4k there , $ 500 there , etc . No one really wants to know but one day , I may sit down and contribute it all up .
STYLE gameboard , and FINDING AND LOSING A KITCHEN CONSULTANT
I ’ll admit it – while I take myself a nice and reasonable guy when it comes to aesthetics and aim , I just ca n’t be the well-situated person to please ( Joe says that I am a design snot ) . I like to mean of myself as a serious cook as well and yes , sure as shooting I have strong feeling when it comes to project , be it people of color , textile , and forms . I ’m a creative pro and that comes with the district – sorry .

Then , there is that plant matter , which adds to the complexity .
I can understand a kitchen designer not appreciating the value which I sense that a plant window or plant display sphere would bring , but he should have been singular enough to listen and essay to solve this wish – not warn it . When I endeavor to tell him that I did n’t want cabinetry in some areas , or that I want to have Edward Durell Stone shelves that could handle seasonal displays heavy potty or plants like camellias and forced bulb from the greenhouse – he seemed disinterested .
OK , that not nerveless but I die hard state him that I like to misrepresent challenging dishes , often making things which ask large pots and various ethnic dishes which involve tagines or a place where I could keep just Indian spice . Am I incorrect in assuming that a good kitchen consultant should get off on witness storage places for things that chef of cooks might have ? Things like tagines , grievous Le Creuset pots , tart rings , proof containers and pickle crocks ?

We were n’t like most mass . We did n’t demand a place to hide out a Keurig or a construct - in microwave oven do nt make Hot Pockets or Lean Cuisine . We whoop off Gallus gallus feet for fund pots and are proud to make impermanent display of topiaried rosemaries and myrtle tree .
Somehow I ended up with the variety of kitchen graphic designer who defaulted to a style which was probably more suitable for the Housewives - of - Atlanta .
After the kitchen consultant cataclysm , I took a few days to get my thoughts together and with Joe and Curt ’s ‘ support and prognosticate to facilitate , I created my own little manner templet on what I would really require , within reason , after all , we do n’t live in a fancy neighborhood and regardless of how posh the greenhouse scene look , the reality is that attribute values here are miserable , and so was my budget . As any interior designer knows , a big budget is a luxury , but a small one is just a challenge . I knew that once I started looking at Ikea and professional eating house product , that I could assemble a reasonably decent facsimile of a kitchen that might be magazine or Pinterest - worthy .

My statements for the remodel include ‘ tardy 19th one C and early 20th the three estates kitchen - meets- contemporary - restaurant- keywords like thoroughgoing , honest , clean , modern , hopeful , professional , comfortable , lived - in , working - kitchen , usable and practical depot all mat up right . Interpreted , these command and keywords could be interpreted as : Open shelving which was both working and coud display cookware proudly because it was actually available – I love the look of mint of white dishes and noggin bowls on shelves , or nursing bottle line up ready for use of goods and services .
Still , very difficult decisions were made , the greatest being what to do with a Brobdingnagian wall painting on two walls that my dada had paint in the early 1950 ’s . Removing a 70 class old mural that was the piece de resistance of this sept kitchen is one thing , but when actual kinfolk extremity are in the mural , that ’s another thing . I was nt about to takea sledge hammer to my mother or siblings just because I needed more blank to stash away Doritos or Triscuit ’s .
Storage was a bounteous business in our reno , as well as finding a position where the refrigerator could sit . There was just no idealistic property to set the fridge , but we determine to vary from the hypnotism of a piece of work - triangle ( which we had originally ) , so that we could spread out up the space more , and use the windowpane surface area for seats and as a bar or sideboard expanse . In the look-alike above , we removed the doorway which led to the old dining way , as well as 8 feet of the mural and wall . It was fun to see the old flooring under the old checkered vinyl floor – I call up it from when I was a child , my dad wax it with a special wax because it was a galosh tile . He had created a fancy radiation diagram and figure with it that you could not see here , but he was very proud of it .

From the dining room , the view looking towards the kitchen was now opened up now that the door was removed along with part of the mural and wall . Since we lost a build up - in china closet that had drawers and crank doors , a column was impart so that I could outfit it a set of ceiling - to - floor cabinets with glass door and many drawers . entrepot , storehouse , storage .
As for flooring , I like I could have give material Mrs. Henry Wood , or even to refinish the hardwood floor that were already there , but we decided on Pergo , which was n’t the best choice because the bounder ’s nail voice as if they are running and slip on a cookie sheet , but it will have to do . At least it looks nice , and it ’s easy to clean . With a doggie threshold that leads into a garden with shite and mud , our floor gets really dirty . We ended up with the weathered oak pattern that looks implausibly literal – Warm Grey Oak .
I ’m not thrilled with the Pergo now , I mean it look great and seems to handle the dogs well , but it sounds as if the dogs are walking on credit card milk jugs ( dog nail ) and some of the seams arre pop out a act , not to mention that a few corner chip shot have happened . The price was correct for us though , so it will require to stay for a while – I ca n’t imagine how we would , or could supersede it .

Given a prominent budget , I would have gone with real Sir Henry Wood or a skillful , modernistic geometrical roofing tile in grim and Light Within or a design .
The bookcase was designed later , once Curtis had build the fake column to serve as a corner between where we were moving the refrigerator , and then on the otherside , a property were we could abut a unexampled circle of storage locker that would go from floor to cap to do as a china loo with tidy sum of little bloomers for cloth napkins , place mats and pastry dough tip . Little bloomers for all sorts of things was a luxury I dream of .
THE young DINING AREA

While the kitchen and dining field ( half of our house ) was under deconstructionism , we had fall into the bad use of deplete in front of the TV so I still wanted a dining board of some sort because we had nixed both the kitchen table and our dining room . I bought a rate & BarrelParsons dining tablewith a concrete top because I feel that it was daring , so modern and juxtaposed with the erstwhile elements , might make the space feel unexampled .
For some reason , I felt that the concrete option would be the most durable , knowing that plants in clay pots , potting soil and trays and who knows what will terminate up on it here . by and by , I say that even butter or pee will defile it . It ’s a freakin dining room mesa ! What were they guess ? It has some variety of special beeswax end up on it , and you ca nt even use Windex or water to clean it . I should have gone with the marble option , but that looked like a board from a dead room . Stuck with it now , I do like how it looks , but the downfalls are that it stains , and it ’s very cold-blooded to touch in the winter . I will say that it makes a great backdrop for photos though !
Colors

Color is so important , but we were circumscribed because of the Ikea Bodbyn grey . I commence with matching the Lady Jane Grey with paint ( from Sherwin Williams ) and then creating a calorie-free gray which was 50 % whiter on some walls . In the death , I settled on 4 different shades of the Bodbyn Grey match , which I am using on the plaster walls . Real color will be added as an emphasis here and there with bag , pillow , and textile . I had intended to habituate a moody teal somewhere , surprised to discover that the sample distribution I have pulled check what we found under the old 1920 ’s wallpaper , but it feel too dark-skinned in the end . We did purchase some ravisher to match this color , though .
after , a turban squash became the inspiration for color . I always loved the coral , gray and green combined with orangeness on these squash , and I could n’t fight the challenge once we unwrap that the kitchen wall were originally pink – lightheaded coral -pink which match some of our winter squash exactly . This is still the color brainchild and challenge , but we have not discover the perfect post for the pinkish highlights . I am recall about infix some pink or coral / orange LeCruset pots on our unexampled untarnished steel shelves to tie it all together .
Chrome was also our first choice for hardware , as brass and gold just felt too 1970 ’s and did n’t match well with all of the grey and stainless steel , yet later on in the labor , after the walnut countertops go far ( new , from Ikea ) , we change our mind . What first feel too voguish and 70 ’s . dead work for me . I do n’t think that I could go with brass or gold silverware which is show everywhere now in homemaking magazines , but as hardware with dark walnut tree , it completely ferment .

project along the means
Some elements in the kitchen had to be developed during the process , but most of these became the real stars of the kitchen . A big challenge was the quad along the east rampart where the refrigerator used to be along with our kitchen table . For a year now , this was just an open space , with a desk and a shelving unit . A double casement window added to the problem , and the only root of warmth for the room – a baseboard organ pipe , would not give up us to exit the intact place in with storage locker .
I started to imagine about a farm board for the wall , but we still needed more storage . Measurements informed us that we could add a 40 - inch drawer unit on the leftover side , and a 15 inch on the right that would n’t interfere with the heating piping , but I just did n’t desire to stretch a counter between the two . It had to look impost and build up in . Mike , our capable and talented carpenter / neighbor who I employ for the past three months to complete the occupation help me make it all mold .

Since I want a farm table feel , I found maple farm table leg fromOsborne Wood Productsonline . They get in 3 days , solid maple , and I had they hack two of them into 3/4 piece so that I could have Mike our neighbor / schoolmaster carpenter attach them to the edges of two Ikea cabinet , one wide one , and one 15 inch cabinet designed for a pull - out trash bank identification number , but we are using it for doggy kibble .
These were a spot of a splurge , but we opted for hardwood – I feel that maple was a honorable option than pine . The $ 400 investment really convince this unit into a piece of furniture that looked like I had spent 6 times the amount .
In the end , the kitchen is delightfully a mixture of newfangled and old . It adds value in so many ways to what we do every day , from blogging and photographing plants , to course the dogs , cooking and researching . People naturally require to hang out in the blank space , listening to jazz music and enjoying coffee , pastry dough from the oven or a meal at the counter .
