New England gardener shares her trips to warmer places
Barbara Cain lives in Norwell , Massachusetts . She ’s partake some photos from her garden with us before . See some of her favourite tropicals in her garden here . But of line this clip of class , a garden in Massachusetts does n’t have a lot of inflorescence move on , so she send some photograph that are a bit of an escape from the winter weather condition .
On a late trip to San Clemente in southern California , Barbara spy this planting . The tall arching flower spike isAgave attenuata(Zones 9–11),surrounded by the vivid orange flowers of an aloe , possiblyAloe spinosissima(Zones 9–11 ) .
bitter aloes are aboriginal to Africa , where the shiny reddish and orange flowers are pollinated by small nectar - sipping bird called sunbirds . There are no sunbirds in California , but this local hummingbird is happy to verify all the nectar does n’t go to wastefulness .

Agaves are native to the Americas , with this mintage hail from cardinal Mexico . As you could see , the hummingbirds are felicitous to pay it a visit as well !
Another jibe of the beautiful aloe flowers . If you love the looking of aloe blooms but live on somewhere too cold for them , consider a crimson - blistering poker ( Kniphofiasp . and hybrids , Zones 6–9 ) , which has similar - seem flower spike but is better suitable to cold climates . We ’ve got articles about red - red-hot pokershereandhere .
Barbara also find a break from the winter frigidity nearer to rest home in the greenhouse of the South Shore Natural Science Center in Norwell , Massachusetts . This is one of the tropical pitcherful industrial plant ( Nepenthes ) in the other development . The tendrils at the remnant of the leaves swell to work a fresh “ ewer ” in a signally short time .

And here is a mound about quick to give and start appropriate dirt ball target to supplement its dieting .
