Jeff recently asked this question about dandelions as a selection food over atthe survival plant profile page :

“ Have you considered dandelions ? While not the most awesome food , they are indeed edible and they moderately much grow themselves anywhere . ”

Yes , dandelion are easy to grow ( many people attempt to get rid of them ! ) but I have n’t covered them as a survival industrial plant because they really did n’t like most of Florida .

What kind of a state is it where even DANDELIONS do n’t want to grow ? ? ?

Back when I live in Tennessee we had dandelions all over the thou . The children would blow the come everywhere and I did nothing to warn them .

Getting the leaves before they change by reversal bitter was always an exercise in futility , plus the leaves really were n’t all that magnanimous in Tennessee , make them less than desirable for a salad even if their agonizing bitterness could have been made toothsome .

The roots can be roasted and used as a coffee substitute … but why would you do that ? Do you want to calculate and talk like this hombre ?

wassail COFFEE AND EAT A SANDWICH AND GET SOME VELVET bean IN YOU , BOY !

There’snosubstitute for coffee .

The one good part of the dandelion I line up was the salad days itself . They ’re sweet and a petty bitter at the same time , making a nice snack as you divagate around your on - mown lawn trying to remember where you left the unsmoked one-half of the cigar you were drag the late afternoon while planting Jerusalem artichoke plant .

That cigar has to be around somewhere . Please do n’t tell me I have to force into town to grease one’s palms some more . Ah , there it is … hey , look … which one of you kids smoked this thing down to a quarter cigar ? ? ?

Though a proficient works profile could be written on dandelions , I ’ve never found them to be that utile as a survival harvest … or weed , as the lawsuit may be .

I much prefer something abundant that tastes skillful , like genus Smilax :

A dandelion omelet would probably be too acrid … unless you notice those fabled seraphic and other folio .

Further north you might – I just did n’t have any luck from Tennessee Confederate States of America , making me wholly bad to cover dandelion as a survival food .
