Chimonanthus praecox ‘Grandiflorus’
I have read in other blogs of snow in America and floods and gales in parts of this res publica . I do sympathise . We were favourable here , yesterday morning the sunlight shone for a while and I regain that the chubby trivial buds of the Winter Sweet;Chimonanthus praecox‘Grandiflorus ’ have opened . This is always a red letter of the alphabet solar day for me . it is a orotund unappealing bush for much of the yr with uninteresting leafage . The trouble is that so as to flower well it needs a inside position in the sun . In the summertime you could reckon of more beautiful shrubs for this spot . I get round the job by threading aClematis viticellathrough it .
In early January though it is an absolute delight . Fragrance is always hard to trace . People seem to perceive it differently . Everyone agree though that the smell ofChimonanthusis exquisite . I do n’t know whether it is a bit likeJasmine , or mayhap a little morsel fruity- no , it ’s no honest ; any path I opine of to describe it fall forgetful . You have to sniff it for yourself and then if you do you will have to have one at all costs . A flyspeck twig in a vase will riddle the whole way .
It blooms on bare arm . I have hear the short flowers described as insignificant . They are not , they are exquisite . They are little , burnished , waxy , yellow claw with a maroon centre . if you do n’t like maroon centres you could get an all yellow one ; Chimonathus luteus . The littler flowered Chimonanthus praecox has paler flowers but they are quite varying .

The plant life bring about large urn - shaped source seedcase . If you sow the come they pullulate readily . This is how I amount to have aChimonanthus , I grew it from ejaculate . Before you get too excited I have to tell you , what nobody assure me ; you have to wait 7 years for the first flower . in reality I had to wait 8 years and then I amaze 3 flowers . The bush flowers on mature wood . It is lovely now but it is 18 days old . I drudge it up and brought it with me when I move because I could n’t stick out to leave it behind after waiting so long for it to flower . It seemed to begrudge the move for a class or two but it has settled down now .
So if you have lot of time and patience growChimonanthusfrom seed . Otherwise go and buy one . I would love to get wind how other people describe the aroma ofChimonanthus . How would you describe it ?

Its always interesting to see a works such as Chimonanthus praecox in rosiness at this time of twelvemonth . Although I have not had this one in the garden , I must say if I did I would also have a Viticella growing through it , I especially like Etoille Violette . ( spelling of it may be dodgy )
Would love to grow this shrub but not sure whether I have a suitably sunny spot . I ’m not surprised that you took this beauty with you when you move . I think that any perennial that you have fire from seed is supernumerary special 🙂
I may have to essay one out this class for my front garden . I love heavily sweet-scented plants that bloom in winter , it makes giving them outer space in the summertime entirely worthwhile . Well done you , on growing it from seed and being patient enough to hold off for it to bloom . And for taking it with you when you moved . I would have done that too .

I leave mine behind at the old house , it never flowered . Think I may need to give another one a go !
I have never experienced the fragrance of this shrub but I can see why you would give it a much sought after spot . I enjoy fragrant plants , and anything that stand out during a desolate season deserves wizard discourse .
