Propagation

No actual propagation activity potential at the moment , we are in the dim midwinter , as the Song dynasty goes .

The terminus “ compost mound ” sound disorganized , like material is only chucked on . I care to think my compost system is a little more organized . I ’ve had a few variation of this over the age but the current one is one . It is concreted in and fully drill and eff , very solid . It has three compartment , one for finished compost , one to contain WIP compost and one empty , for the active heap to be turn in to .   I become it once a week which seems to do the conjuration , keeping it nicely mixed and air out . It only takes 5 minutes to do .

What does the pile contain ?

The paper is important to keep the carbon up , otherwise there ’s too much atomic number 7 from the grass etc . If no atomic number 6 is added the mix will go slimey and smelly . Every meter I mow the lawn I add a newspaper worth of sliced newspaper to the lot , mixing it up a fleck with the grass mowings . turn the plenty is important too , the O helps the ingredient breakdown .   I also make trusted that the great deal does n’t dry out , wrick the hosepipe on it for 5 mo if it looks dry . If you do n’t have any other textile ( hard to imagine ) just grass and paper will together give a worthwhile compost . I remember visiting the Eden labor in Cornwall when it was still a muddy hole in the ground . At the visitor centre they had a piece on their soil , which they were making from composting grass clippings and the used newspaper hand towel from their loo . If it ’s good enough for what is now one of Cornwall ’s top botanic attraction , it ’s sound enough for us!The bottom of the cumulation must be in contact with the unfinished earth ( i.e. not on pave or concrete ) . This is so the worms can observe their way in . If you start a bus from scratch , a few will quickly witness their way in and get munch and breeding . The pile will soon be diffuse with them , nice and ruby and wriggly . It ’s the worm that do most of the work , breaking the ingredients down . If it ’s not potential for your compost heap to be in contact with the bare terra firma , tell some worms on the interweb ( yes , you really can buy anything ) , they ’ll repay the cost many meter over .

The resulting compost is black gold . I use it as a mulch on the moulding , on the veggie beds at the final stage of the maturate time of year , and I also use it as an ingredient in my potting premix , sieved to remove the expectant oaf . All that turning and shredding will eventually derive in to its own at the tail terminal of the generation journeying when I should have a whole bunch of immature plants to pot on .
