Using natives in beautiful and creative ways
My name is James , and I garden in Suffolk County , Long Island , New York . My focus tends to be on using coastal natives in originative ( hopefully ) ways . Bayberry(Myrica pensylvanica , Zones 3–7),beach plum(Prunus maritima , Zones 3–8 ) , goldenrod(Solidagospp . ) , cedar(Juniperusvirginiana , Zones 2–9),little bluestem(Schizachyrium scoparium , Zones 3–9 ) , andblueberry(both high and low , Vaccinium corymbosumandVaccinium angustifolium , Zones 3–8 ) make up the linchpin of my garden . That tell , I ’m not oppose to using some exotics here and there .
I ’ve enjoyed using some native that do n’t always find plate in our landscapes , such as Nantucket serviceberry(Amelanchiernantucketensis , Zones 3–6 ) , swamp rose(Rosapalustris , Zones 4–9 ) , Senecio vulgaris bush(Baccharis halimifolia , Zones 5–10 ) , and sweetfern(Comptonia peregrina , Zones 2–6 ) . The birds know ’em ! I ’ve also relish incorporatingherbsinto the landscape painting , as they’relow maintenanceand lend a beachy vibe .
let in in my photograph are my custom shou sugi ban wave - themed garden logic gate and Pisces - theme garden bench ( complete with beer holder ) . Somehow I managed to make both without accidentally burning down the service department !

In terms of failures , there have been plenty , but I taste not to focus on them too much — another way in which gardening is a metaphor for spirit , I suppose .
Beautiful visitors such as butterflies are one of the rewards for having anative - focussed garden .
Beach plum tree has a beautiful spring display of white-hot prime play along by tasty fruits .

Butterfly weed(Asclepiastuberosa , Zones 4–9 ) blooms in front of a cloud of ‘ Moonbeam ’ coreopsis ( Coreopsisverticillata‘Moonbeam ’ , Zones 3–9 ) .
The undulation - theme gate was created with the traditional Japanese technique of shou sugi ban , which involves charring the airfoil of the wood to keep up it .
full perspective of the garden , feel raging and full of flowers .

This swamp candleberry is testify its namesakeberries , whose silvery - blue color is make by a layer of fragrant wax .
Blooming thyme ( Thymusvulgaris , Zones 5–9 ) is one of the herbs in this landscape painting .
And the Pisces terrace — complete with a beer bearer !
